Summary

When I ordered this meal kit, I didn’t think too hard about it. It kind of looked like a “breakfast dinner”, and both Gail and I love having breakfast for dinner, so it seemed like a safe bet.

What The Heck Is Polenta Anyway?

Once it arrived, I started wondering how well these things would go together. First thing was to wonder if I really knew what polenta is. I actually don’t know what it is officially, but unofficially, I’d say it’s very close to grits. I’m not sure I’d notice the difference in a blind taste test.

What’s Up With The Egg On Top?

Yeah, placing a fried egg on top of dinner is not an everyday meal trick around here. But I’m game to give it a go, right? So, frying an egg is a bit of a challenge for me still, especially to keep the yellow runny. But I’m getting a little better at the process, so I wasn’t too worried about that little chore. I overcooked one a little, but the other was perfect and the yolk stayed a little runny. Anyway, the egg on top really made this dinner feel very breakfast-y, though also a tad bit weird. I know it’s a “thing” on TV Chef shows, so it’s not all that weird in the larger scheme of things, but it’s a bit weird for us.

The Prep

The last meal kit I prepared from Green Chef (which was also the first I prepared from Green Chef) was super quick and easy prep. This one took a little more effort. It wasn’t difficult, but it definitely wasn’t as easy as the first. That disappointed me a little.

Was It Good?

  • The only thing that really matters – flavor. We both gave it a 4. It was good, even better than I expected. The kale salad was the element with the most flavor, thanks to the red vinaigrette dressing.
  • The polenta was a little more on the blah side, but it was okay.
  • The mushroom ragu definitely surprised me. I envisioned a Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee Spaghettios flavor for some reason (don’t ask me why). Instead, it was a very nicely flavored side dish that helped brighten the polenta blahness when eaten together.

Worth Trying Again?

I probably wouldn’t order this one again, even though the flavor was pretty good. But in the end, it didn’t really excite either of us, so I’ll probably pass on it next time.
