Summary

If I was only judging this meal on its looks, I would give it 4.5 stars. But it’s the flavor that really counts, and it doesn’t deserve that many stars. Actually, Gail and I both liked the maple butter on the chops. Neither of us knew how that kind of combination of flavors would turn out, but we agree it works. I can see using this maple butter on other dishes, and it would be simple to make. Just a little butter, maple syrup and thyme. Piece of cake.

The broccoli mash wasn’t bad, but it was bland and uninspiring, and I could describe the carrots the same way. Despite the maple butter, the chops were just okay as well. All in all, it was just a big ol’ okay. And “okay” doesn’t cut it.

That concludes the first week of Home Chef meal kits. Two out of three didn’t make the cut, though one was excellent. I’ll give Home Chef one more week, but if next week’s meals aren’t considerably better, then I’ll move on to the next service.
