Today’s Bloganuary prompt is:
Why do I write?
Good question. I don’t have a very inspiring answer, I’m afraid.
- Because I can. I mean, ya know, despite what it may seem like when I’m goofing off, I have a bit of talent in that area, so I do it.
- To communicate, obviously. To convey concepts to others. Doh.
- But if I’m not writing to communicate – i.e., if I’m not doing it for business or practical reasons… If I’m writing just because I feel like writing – then I’m doing it to entertain people. Like a comedian tells jokes to make people laugh. Like an actress delivers her lines on stage. Like a dancer pirouettes or a violinist does her violin-ey thing. I write. I tell stories. I embellish. I massage words. So that you can be swept away into another reality.
I enjoy telling stories. Sometimes, I tell them verbally. More often, I place fingers on keys, and write. Other times, I combine the two. I’ll write, and then read it aloud, embellishing the already-embellished written words with the tone and pace of my voice. Embellishment upon embellishment, all to draw you in, weave the story around you, encapsulate your soul, and ENTERTAIN YOU.
Excuse me, while I demonstrate in my oh-so-EXTRA way. Shhh…are you listening? No? Oh, sorry, click play below.
This post is part of the WordPress Bloganuary Challenge for 2023, where everyone participating is provided a writing prompt each day. Today’s prompt was to write about write I write. (How meta).
